Her Majesty Queen Sirikit

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is the widow of King Rama IX and the mother of the new King Rama X. She occupies numerous charitable functions, including the presidency of the Red Cross. Moreover, many decorations praised her commitment.
E.g. environmental protection, rural women’s living conditions, education and the promotion of Thai culture.

On 12 August, the whole country celebrates the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who is blowing Her 85 candles this year.

5 days of Celebration for Queen Sirikit Birthday

Traditional dances and music, concerts, traditional theater performances, parades, fireworks and singing of the Queen’s song … Her birthday is celebrated over 5 days. The most important are held at the Sanam Luang in Bangkok.

Why wearing blue color on that day ?

You may be surprised by the Thai’ love for colors ! It’s deeply rooted to their tradition and globally omnipresent wherever you look. They even have assigned a color to each day of the week.
Monday is yellow, Tuesday is pink, Wednesday is green, Thursday is orange, Friday is blue, Saturday is purple and Sunday is red.

Even though colors may sometimes divisive roles in Thai culture, this tradition has been perpetuated for centuries. Thus, as the Queen is born on a Friday, the whole country traditionally wear blue outfits, by respect of Her birthday.

Mother’s Day in Thailand

Also, as She is considered to be the Mother of all Thai’s, Her birthday is also declared Mother’s Day in Thailand. It is a bank holiday all over Thailand. Bouquets or necklaces of jasmine, gifts and T-shirts expressing their love for their mum are de rigueur.

The whiteness of the jasmine flower recalls the purity of a mother’s love for her child. The intensity of the perfume illustrates its strength. And the fact that this flower blossoms all year long suggests the eternity of this love.
